Uptown Charlotte is one of the most vibrant and exciting areas in North Carolina, this booming southern city that sits in 2.4 square miles with an iconic skyline - is where old meets new. The central business district of Charlotte is split into four wards, First Ward, Second Ward, Third Ward, and Fourth Ward, by the intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets, and bordered by Interstate 277 and Interstate 77.

Charlotte is the second largest banking center in the country behind New York City.  Uptown is located adjacent to several major attractions that draw people from all over the state, including the NBA Charlotte Hornets that play their home games at the Spectrum Center, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the Bank of America Stadium (home of the Carolina Panthers), and the Levine Museum of the New South.

Why the name "Uptown" vs. the popular "Downtown"?  For as long as there's been a Charlotte, Americans have debated this long-standing term. In the 1980s, city leaders in Uptown wanted to make their area sound more attractive and stop the population from moving away. But "Uptown" dates back much earlier than that.  In the early days of Charlotte, those who walked or rode horses to Trade and Tryon to buy or sell goods would say they were going "up to town" because it was uphill.  This was shortened to "Uptown." When the factory system took hold, downtown became the common vernacular for that area of town. By the 1980s, Uptown was revived as a PR campaign to bring attention again to that part of town.
